About

Fleur Yearsley (b.1990 Manchester, UK) is a recent graduate from MFA Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art as a recipient of the Gwen John Scholarship. She graduated BA Fine Art from the Manchester School of Art in 2013. As an awardee of the Jealous Prize 2018 the artist undertook a residency at their London studios to create a limited edition print of her work that was exhibited at Original London Print Fair at the Royal Academy of Arts. Recent exhibitions in London include FBA Futures at Mall Galleries, Paper Cuts at Tripp Gallery and the group show Desires at GNYP Gallery in Berlin. The artist has also undertaken residencies at Slade School of Fine Art, Malvern St. James and Cheadle Hulme School. As a beneficiary of the Almacantar Award she was awarded a bursary and studio in East London for a year and was shortlisted for the Dentons Art Prize 2018.

Fleur paints from her own elusive, but potent memories.Taking the bare essentials and what is necessary from each personal experience, the paintings are structurally considered and refined with colourful sensibility. The freshness in their immediacy, the paintings appear big and bold, but at the same time sensitive. Subject matter is diverse and the heightened scale of the paintings pushes the very physical act of making. Painting with urgency before each memory slips away, they are immediate and energetically fluid. This vigorous way of making is simultaneously combined with meditative and pensive gestures. The artist uses the materiality of paint to intertwine humanity around each subject matter by working through personal and collective histories and relationships.
